OCR: Pro!)-P 0 Demonstrate Leonardo was especially curious about how waves affect underwater motion and how that motion might transport sand, seashells, and other objects. Using a glass tank, he experiments "to see whether the small surface wave causes the water to move high above its bottom." (9v) In a re-created experiment with underwater currents, millet seeds are mixed into the water, and a wave-maker generates a train of surface waves. The seeds form a circular pattern, and the seeds deeper in the water move much more slowly. As Leonardo notes, "the water at the bottom ... will be so much slower than the wave of the surface as it is deeper than the height of the wave." (9v) Leonardo also realized that very little of a wave's water is transported over significant distances. For the most part, "the water does not move from its previous place on account of the waves, but only the impulses are transmitted." (23r)
